Meet the expedition members

Ana Karolina Starič Drusany

Ana Karolina Starič Drusany

Ana Karolina is a 25-year-old general medicine student in Ljubljana. She loves taking on new challenges, creating and exploring. She is looking forward to every part of the expedition project, both the preparations and the expedition itself. Most of all, she is looking forward to the people they will meet, their stories and what they will be able to learn from one another, as well as to growing closer as a team. She sees the expedition as an opportunity to get to know life in an environment very different from the one she calls home.

Eva Selan

Eva Selan

Eva is a 26-year-old medical student from Ljubljana who is finishing her studies this year, and after the expedition she will start her internship. Besides learning about the human body, what excites her most about medicine is working with people. On the expedition, she is most looking forward to fieldwork, to seeing how healthcare works in an environment very different from ours, and to all the little moments we will share as a team along the way. She often says that past travels turned her view of the world upside down, so she believes Uganda will leave its mark on her too and bring home a new, richer version of Eva.

Giorgia Sinigoi

Giorgia Sinigoi

Giorgia comes from Nabrežina (Aurisina) near Trieste and is currently taking her first steps as a doctor, working as a junior doctor at Nova Gorica General Hospital. For her, medicine is more than a profession: it is a chance to use her knowledge where people truly need it. She finds it hard to name a single reason for deciding to join the expedition to Uganda, but says she has a strong feeling that she has to go. On the expedition, she is most looking forward to meeting people from a different environment and culture, especially the youngest ones, and to the new stories, friendships and moments they will create and share with the locals and with one another.

Vesna Devetak

Vesna Devetak

Vesna is a general medicine graduate from Vrh Sv. Mihaela (San Michele del Carso) near Gorizia. What draws her most to medicine is its “detective” side: searching for answers and understanding the complexity of the human body. On the expedition, she is looking forward to new people, new knowledge and the chance to see medicine from a different perspective. For her, Uganda is the fulfilment of a long-held wish to devote her knowledge, time and energy to people beyond the environment she knows, while learning a great deal herself along the way.

Matija Barba

Matija Barba

Matija is a 25-year-old medical graduate who currently lives in Ljubljana, though his roots reach into several Slovenian regions. He was drawn to expeditions long before he decided to study medicine, having loved discovering new places and getting to know their people, culture and history ever since he was little. Despite his many travels, the expedition to Uganda will be the first time he sees the people in the place he visits first and foremost as patients. That is exactly what excites him most: he is curious how different people understand health and healthcare, and what they mean in their everyday lives, at home and elsewhere in the world. Things that, like all the best things, you won’t find in a textbook, but only discover in the field.
